Children and staff at Brickhill Primary School are rejoicing after being crowned ‘Bedford Sports School of the Year’ at a glittering ceremony held at Bedford’s Corn Exchange on Monday 9 December.
The caring community school has always promoted a strong ‘sport for all’ sporting culture involving all children from as young as four years old and right through to 11 years old – every child is encouraged to take part in a sport that suits them.
For the third year running, the school achieved the School Games Gold Award for their commitment to the development of competition across the school and they continue to enter KS1 and KS2 teams into multi-sports tournaments across the Borough. They have had notable successes this year too with an unbeaten Year 5 and 6 boys and girls football side, cricket and tennis teams, and a mixed dodgeball team that reached the County finals. The range of sports on offer for a Primary School is exceptional with pupils able to take part in gymnastics, dance, athletics, tag rugby, hockey, netball, futsal, Bikeability, martial arts, archery, cheerleading, table tennis and swimming.
The school has a real commitment to its policy for inclusivity. Headteacher Debbie Wilson said, “We go the extra mile to ensure that all children have the opportunity to participate in sport, and we often have A, B, C and D teams across all sports to give everyone the chance to compete. We have worked really hard to provide a comprehensive programme of clubs and activities to appeal to all ages and to positively include those children who are considered disadvantaged. I am absolutely thrilled that we have received this award and it is a real credit to the Brickhill Primary team.”
The sporting interest of girls is also high on their list of priorities and they have set up a whole school ‘Fit4Fun’ club for the enjoyment of less active children.
