Flitwick Scouts have been highly commended by Meryl Dolling the previous High Sheriff for Bedfordshire.

The formal presentation of the award had to be cancelled, thus preventing members of the Group from collecting the award personally.

The citation said: “In recognition of great and valuable services to the community.”

The award also recognises the appreciation of the residents and people of the said High Sheriff’s County for activity and contribution in enhancing the life of the community.”

Flitwick Scouts offer a wide variety of activities to over 200 boys and girls aged 6 to 17.

These might range from muddy walks in the woods to toasting marshmallows over an open fire; planning a meal, buying the ingredients and then cooking the meal to learning about other countries; or spending time learning how to kayak or knowing about the local area.

Adult volunteer Nigel Taylor said: “Children and Young People will learn skills for life when involved with Flitwick Scout Group.

“It is wonderful to see Beaver Scouts (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) growing in confidence, trying activities for the first time and building friendships.

“When they become Explorers (boys and girls aged 14 to 17) they will learn about planning, communication and running activities.

“Several of our Explorers have used their time in Scouting to help with their personal statement for University or to help them get an apprenticeship.

“This year, many of the volunteers have developed their computer skills by running meetings via Zoom.”

After their last Zoom meeting of the year, where the Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 – 10) made banana Santas, paper snowflakes and had a treasure hunt, Thomas Hendry said: “I really enjoy the activities we do in Cubs and I was very excited to see Father Christmas at our meeting. We played a game called Santa Says.”

The Scouts (boys and girls aged 10-13) used their pioneering skills to build a Christmas Tree outside their headquarters using scaffolding poles and rope and then wired some flashing lights to it.
