A drunken thug who kicked two men unconscious in Luton town centre has been jailed for 28 months.

His victims had been out that evening watching a televised football match in a pub. But as friends, Dipesh Patel and Thomas Clarke made their way along Chapel Street, Polish born Robert Szezepan and a group of men he was with launched an unprovoked and merciless attack on the pair.

First Szczepan and his friends punched Mr Patel to the ground, said prosecutor Neil King at Luton Crown Court.

And when Mr Clarke went to the aid of his friend, he to was punched by the defendant and the others end ended up on the ground.

Mr King said the attack came to the attention of a cctv operator who could see Szczepan and others kicking the men in the head as they lay helpless on the ground.

In court Szczepan, 28, of Rothesay Road, Luton pleaded guilty to two charges of assault the men occasioning them actual bodily harm carried out on the evening of August 18, 2019.

The prosecutor told the court the defendant and his pals had been drinking when they punched the two football fans to the ground.

“This defendant then kicked both men in the head rendering them unconscious,” he said.

As a result the court was told the victims had limited recollection of what happened to them. Ambulances were called to the scene and they were taken to hospital while the defendant and his group fled.

In fact, said Mr King Szczepan wasn’t arrested until November of that year.

Two other men subsequently arrested and charged for their part in the attack are currently on the run having failed to turn up at a magistrate court hearing.

The court was told that since the attack the defendant had made significant changes in his life including finding a steady job and cutting down on his drinking.

Recorder Andrew Johnson told Szczepan: “This was in my judgement a vicious, unprovoked attack.”

He jailed him for 28 months telling him he would have to serve 14 months behind bars before he can be released on licence.
