Following the spectacular spring flowering display along the Embankment, the Council is giving the tulip bulbs away for free to community groups.

The Council planted over 40,000 tulip bulbs in the autumn as part of the spring seasonal bedding display, which is now coming to an end. These spring bulbs and plants will shortly be removed along the Embankment to make way for the summer display.

Unfortunately, the Council cannot reuse the bulbs as they would need to be left in the ground for several weeks after flowering which wouldn’t be in keeping with Bedford’s beautiful Embankment.

So, to prevent them being wasted, they are being given away to local community groups to replant them, and the spring colours of the Embankment will be seen throughout the borough in future years.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said “We are inviting community groups in Bedford Borough who are interested in having some bulbs to register their interest, via email at bugsandbees@bedford.gov.uk by noon on Monday 23 May, and let us know the group they are applying for and where they are planning to plant them.

“This is always a really popular giveaway and I am delighted that we have been able to do this again this year. Bulbs will be given away on a first come, first serve basis. Applications may close early if demand is high, as it has been in the past, so we are encouraging groups who are interested to get in touch sooner rather than later.”
