Council supports National Apprenticeship Week

Central Bedfordshire Council is proud to support this year’s National Apprenticeship Week (February 6-12) – an annual celebration of the work of apprentices.

Central Bedfordshire Council offers its own apprenticeship programme that paves the way for an exciting career within the council. It currently employs 101 apprentices – this includes new recruits, existing staff who are upskilling and apprenticeships being carried out at schools.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2023 is ‘Skills for Life’, focussing on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career.

Christina, who is currently completing a Level 3 Business Administrator apprenticeship at the Council said: “Applying for an apprenticeship at the council is the best thing I’ve done – it allowed me to step onto a new career path. Now I look forward to going to work and the future looks so much brighter.”

Cllr. Kevin Collins, Executive Member for Planning & Regeneration, said: “Apprentices make a valuable contribution in organisations across Central Bedfordshire, and we are pleased to support National Apprenticeship Week. We’re also very proud of our own apprenticeship programme, with our apprentices working hard in various departments across the Council.

“Anyone over the age of 16 who’s living in England can apply for an apprenticeship. As well as being suitable for people who are just beginning their careers, an apprenticeship is also suitable for people who want to further their careers, or who want to change career. They are a great option for many because they offer an opportunity for someone to earn as they learn – gaining hands-on experience while being given time to study for a qualification.”

Former apprentice Anne, who completed a Level 6 Social Worker degree apprenticeship said: “What an amazing opportunity it was to be able to undertake a Social Work degree as an apprentice, something I never thought would happen in my 40’s. Having the chance to earn and learn made such a difference. The apprenticeship will open doors for me that were previously closed.”
