Bedford Borough Council has taken further steps to combat homelessness and bolster support services with the induction of 22 new recruits into its housing team.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in the council’s ongoing efforts to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping and provide essential assistance to individuals and families.

It’s going to speed up our efforts in housing and make sure we’re tackling these problems with a new team effort across the whole council.

Anna Robbani, Head of Housing, Homelessness and Customer Services, said: “I’m delighted to be joined today by 22 new recruits who share our passion for making a meaningful impact on the lives of Bedford Borough’s residents.

“These new roles range from caseworkers to specialists in social housing and private sector negotiation and show our dedication to delivering expert advice and support on homelessness-related issues.

“I’m really pleased that as a Council we’ve been able to bring forward this important initiative, to provide a lifeline to residents experiencing challenges or issues with their housing needs, and to help them access vital support, expertise, funding or opportunities to improve things for them and their families.”

“Vitally the new recruits have just started a new comprehensive 6-week training programme delivered in-house and by specialists on housing law from the housing and homelessness charity Shelter.

“Their training will include important subjects such as equality and diversity, supporting victims of domestic abuse and safeguarding from experts in both adults and children’s services.

“Having already met with the Portfolio Holder and Director as part of their induction, our new recruits know the importance of the role they have in the Borough. This is just the start with further advanced training and mentoring from senior colleagues to follow.”

Cllr Phillippa Martin-Moran-Bryant, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Community Safety said: “I am delighted that the new recruits have joined the Council and started their extensive training programme.

“Meeting our new officers it’s amazing to have so many Bedfordians who want to help with housing and homelessness in their own community and many bring with them brilliant experience that’s going to really help the service.

“This is a significant milestone in improving the housing service in Bedford Borough to make a difference by supporting people when they are facing or dealing with homelessness.”
