Bedford Green party Councillors on Bedford Borough Council (BBC) have welcomed the council’s advice on food waste.

Lucy Bywater and Ben Foley support the BBC’s initiative but point out there are many other ways to reduce our environmental impact this Christmas.

It is worth avoiding waste of all sorts, not just wasted food.

So, for instance, a green route is not buying people plastic presents they don’t want or need.

Alternatives include making something small by hand which will mean more to the person receiving it.

Another good option is to buy second hand, or from local independent shops. Vouchers for these small independents are a good option too.

Thinking particularly about food waste, Councillor Lucy Bywater was concerned that yet another Christmas was going by without food waste collections.

Lucy said: “Many other councils already have food waste collections, yet the LibDem leadership of Bedford council are waiting until they are forced into them by central government.”

Ben Foley, Green councillor for Castle Ward said: “While food waste is relevant, there is a lot more to ‘going green’ – switching your energy supplier to a firm like Ecotricity or Good Energy at a time when we’re all using more, could make a very real difference to your impact.”
