The man who died when a sports car crashed with an ambulance that was responding to a 999 call has been named online as Simon Diffey.

Mr Diffey, who was in his 50s, had been a professional race car driver and was a member of the Classic Car Club.

He was driving a classic Bugatti when the crash happened on the A6 between Barton and Clophill at around 6.30pm on Saturday, May 14, 2022.

Mr Diffey was named as the victim on social media. He was a well-known businessman in the Luton printing industry.

On the Goodwood Revival, a historic motor race meeting, the social media page read: “Goodwood is sad to learn of the death of long-time competitor and loyal friend Simon Diffey in a road traffic accident last weekend.

“Diffey was well known and liked by all at Goodwood from his fellow drivers to the teams and all of us who work here. His energy and enthusiasm for historic racing and the classic car world were unmatched and Diffey competed at Goodwood in everything from single seaters to soapbox racers.

“Our thoughts are with his family.”

Sergeant Tim Davies of Beds, Cambs and Herts road policing said: “I would urge anyone to contact us as soon as possible if you witnessed the collision or were driving along the A6 at that time and saw the incident, especially if you have a dash cam fitted to your vehicle.”
