Bedford Kenyans celebrate the 60th anniversary of their country becoming independent

On Saturday, December 9, 2023 local Kenyans held a ceremony to celebrate 60 years of Kenya’s independnce, raising their country’s flag over Bedford’s old Town Hall.

The occasion marked a significant and historic milestone for the Kenyan community in Bedford. Bedford was the second town, after Borough of Barking last year, to proudly raise the Kenyan flag on British soil since gaining independence.

Many Kenyans in Bedford hold dual nationalities, and their children, were born here and are the first generation of Kenyan Britons.

The event was more than just a flag-raising; it served as a valuable learning opportunity for local children. It reinforced the importance of embracing both their Kenyan heritage and British culture, ensuring the continuity of this legacy for the future.

The Kenyan’s community’s commitment to Harambee (Togetherness) is not be confined to their own circles but extends to the broader public.

Those attending the ceremony were excited to have shared this momentous occasion, and it symbolises the ongoing dedication to fostering unity and understanding in the town.
